Buġibba to the Blue Lagoon: How to get there

Trying to figure out how to get from Buġibba to the Blue Lagoon in Malta?

I’m a local, and in this guide, I show you exactly how to get there.

Long story short – There are two options:

  1. Organised Boat Tours
  2. Buġibba to Blue Lagoon Ferry Services

Keep reading this post to help you decide which of the two options is suited for your preferences and travel group.

Accessing the Blue Lagoon

If you plan on setting foot on shore (normally only if you take the ferry, not for boat tours), you have to pre-book a free pass via the online booking system, which will grant you entry for a few hours.

Check out the full details here: Blue Lagoon Access Tickets Guide.

Ferry Services vs Boat Tour compared

Let’s compare the two most popular ways of getting to the Blue Lagoon from Buġibba:

Comparison FERRY SERVICES  BOAT TRIPS FROM BUĠIBBA
Price The cheapest way to get to the Blue Lagoon (Prices vary between €13 – €15 per person for a round-trip). More expensive (approx. €30 or more), but a much easier and more comfortable journey to Comino. Lots of options available, including alternative sunset tours if you prefer an afternoon – late evening excursion.
Flexibility Longer journey, especially if you’re using public transport to travel from Buġibba to the ferry terminal in Ċirkewwa/Marfa. Additionally, unlike boat tours (where you can book sunset tours for a longer stay), the last ferry trip back to Malta is usually at around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM (always check with your operator of choice). Visitors who book accommodation options in Buġibba, St. Paul’s Bay and Qawra are within walking distance or just a short bus ride away from the departure point, Buġibba Jetty. Needless to say, this is handy, as it saves time and money on transport.
Access ticket You need to pre-book your free access pass to the Blue Lagoon to set foot on shore. This pass is often included with your ferry ticket, but always check with the operator of your choice. You don’t need to book your free ticket to the Blue Lagoon if you’re staying on board or just swimming.
Sightseeing Although you’ll see some of the main caves during a quick tour, you won’t get to see the more secluded ones. Most companies include stops at secluded sites & hidden gems only accessible by private boat.
Experience With little space on shore in summer, you’ll need to find a spot somewhere. Lockers are available, but not the best experience. As guests of the tour, you can leave your belongings on board and use the amenities (e.g. water slides, snorkelling equipment, toilet facilities).

Tips from a Local 📝

  • If you’re using ferry services to get to the Blue Lagoon, make sure you reach the terminal in Ċirkewwa or Marfa early. Ferries can get crowded at the terminal, and if you leave it till late, it will be difficult to find a beach spot at the Blue Lagoon.
  • Don’t underestimate the Mediterranean sun, especially if you’re visiting during peak season. Besides your swimwear and towel, pack sun essentials: a pair of sunglasses, a hat and suncream, preferably with SPF 50.
  • Always have some cash on you to pay for things like an umbrella & sunbed, snacks & drinks and the ferry ride.
  • I recommend bringing your own food and drinks before heading to the Blue Lagoon. Although you can buy snacks from the food trucks in Comino, some of the items are quite overpriced.
  • Before booking a day trip to the Blue Lagoon, review the excursions that interest you to ensure you choose one that works for you and your travel group. Some tours may be ideal for a family with young children & infants, while others are suitable for small or big groups, couples, adventurous travellers, etc.
  • Ideally, plan your visit to Malta during late May and early June or late September and October. There are usually fewer crowds at the Blue Lagoon at this time of year, and the sea is still suitable for swimming.
