What is the Blue Lagoon (Malta)?

The Blue Lagoon (Malta) is a natural pool with azure waters. Its surroundings are mostly rocky, but there is also a small sandy beach. It is located in Comino, one of the islands forming part of the Maltese archipelago.

Is the Blue Lagoon worth it?

The Blue Lagoon is worth visiting for most people, especially for its turquoise waters and natural beauty in the surrounding areas. The only downside is that it’s a highly popular tourist destination that gets very crowded during the peak of summer (June – September).

What is the best time to go to the Blue Lagoon?

The best time to go to the Blue Lagoon is early in the morning, if you want to beat the heat and the heavy crowds. You can also avoid the peak summer months and opt for the shoulder months instead (May-June) or (September-October).

How much does it cost to go to the Blue Lagoon?

It costs around €20 – €25 (ferry + public transport) if you go to the Blue Lagoon by yourself. Meanwhile, a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon from the main island of Malta costs around €30 or more, depending on your budget and preferences.

Is the Blue Grotto the same as the Blue Lagoon in Malta?

No, the Blue Grotto is not the same as the Blue Lagoon in Malta. The Blue Grotto is a myriad of caves found in the southern coast of Malta, while the Blue Lagoon is natural pool on one of Malta’s sister islands, Comino.

Is the Blue Lagoon busy and crowded?

Yes, the Blue Lagoon can get busy and crowded since it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Maltese Islands. If you want to avoid crowds, it’s best to catch an early ferry and choose a weekday rather than the weekend

Are Blue Lagoon and Comino the same?

The Blue Lagoon and Comino are closely related but don’t refer to the same place. The Blue Lagoon is a shallow bay located on the tiny island of Comino, which is one of the Maltese islands. It’s largely uninhabited with many coastal treasures, including the Blue Lagoon, the Crystal Lagoon, the Santa Marija Caves, Santa Marija Bay and many others

Does the Blue Lagoon have a beach?

The Blue Lagoon is mostly a rocky beach, but you will find a small patch of sand at one of the entry points.

How deep is the Blue Lagoon?

The Blue Lagoon in Comino is generally quite shallow, but if you go further from the shore, depths increase to anything between 4 to 7 metres.

Can you swim in the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, you can swim in the Blue Lagoon. The wonderful, crystal-clear waters make it a great swimming spot for the whole family. However, it’s always important to be aware of any water currents, especially if you go further out from the shore. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.

Are there any jellyfish at the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, there may be jellyfish at the Blue Lagoon (Malta), usually in spring rather than summer. However, this depends on several factors, including wind direction, water currents and weather changes

Are there sharks in the Blue Lagoon?

Shark encounters at the Blue Lagoon are rare since it’s a shallow area that attracts a lot of people. There are various shark species across the much deeper waters of the Maltese Islands, but away from human activity.

Facilities

Can you eat at the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, you can eat at the Blue Lagoon. Small food trucks and kiosks sell items such as sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, snacks, ice-creams and drinks. However, the items are costly for what you get, so I recommend bringing your own food.

Are there any toilets at the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, toilets are available at the Blue Lagoon. However, don’t expect any luxuries. I recommend bringing a small toiletries bag with anything you need, since you won’t always find toilet paper and soap available. They’re not always the cleanest either.

Can you snorkel in the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, you can snorkel at the Blue Lagoon. In fact, it can be one of the best spots to snorkel, although in summer you’ll want to steer clear of the main part of the bay. Nevertheless, its azure waters make it ideal for enthusiasts to spot spectacular marine life.

Is the Blue Lagoon open in winter or off-season?

The Blue Lagoon remains open all year round, including winter and off-season. You may even see some people swimming and hiking on the cliffs. However, ferry services are less frequent, and tours go ahead depending on the weather.

Getting there

What’s the best way to get to the Blue Lagoon?

The best way to get to the Blue Lagoon (Malta) is by booking a boat trip from the main island to Comino. Prices range from €30 and over, but many perks are included, such as visiting other spots on the island, using the boat’s facilities, etc. You also don’t need an access pass if you don’t intend to set foot on land.

Alternatively, you can also use the Comino ferry services located in Ċirkewwa or Marfa. Although it’s cheaper to use the ferry, the journey to the terminals is longer, especially if you’re using public transport, and once in Comino, you may struggle to find a spot on the beach if you don’t head there early enough. You also need an access pass.

Can you go to the Blue Lagoon on your own?

Yes, you can go to the Blue Lagoon on your own. Depending on where you’re staying, you can use buses or taxis to first get to the Comino ferry pick-up points in Ċirkewwa or Marfa (opposite Riviera Hotel). Next, you have to use the ferry service to the Blue Lagoon that runs every 30 minutes during peak season.

How long does it take to get to the Blue Lagoon?

From Malta, it takes approximately 25 minutes to get to the Blue Lagoon, while from Gozo, it takes around 15 minutes. Both journeys can be slightly longer since a short trip around the Comino caves is included on your way there / on your way back.

How often does the Blue Lagoon ferry run?

The Blue Lagoon ferry runs every 30 minutes during peak season. The service offered by Ebsons runs between 9:30h and 18:00h, while Comino Co-Op Ferries operate between 8:30h and 19:00h. During winter, the ferry still runs but is less frequent due to rough seas and bad weather.

How long is the ferry from Malta to Blue Lagoon?

The ferry from Malta to the Blue Lagoon is around 25 minutes. The journey can be slightly longer since on the way there or on your way back, the skipper will take you around the Comino caves.

Is there a ferry from Mellieħa to the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, there is a ferry from Mellieħa to the Blue Lagoon. You can catch the Comino ferry from Ċirkewwa or Marfa (opposite Riviera Hotel) terminals.

Can you go to the Blue Lagoon from Gozo?

How to get to the Blue Lagoon from St. Paul's Bay?

The easiest way to get to the Blue Lagoon is by booking a boat trip with a tour company that departs from the Sirens Quay in St Paul’s Bay. This option is ideal if you want to avoid a longer journey to the Ċirkewwa ferry terminal. Alternatively, take bus 221 if you want to use the Comino ferry services from Ċirkewwa or Marfa.

How to get to the Blue Lagoon from St. Julian’s?

The best way to get to the Blue Lagoon from St. Julian’s is by booking a boat trip that departs from Sliema Ferries. Most bus routes to Sliema (13, 13A, 14, 16, and 22) stop directly at the Ferries, but you can also take a taxi there. Alternatively, take bus 222 if you want to use the Comino ferry services from Ċirkewwa or Marfa.

Is there a ferry from Sliema to Comino?

No, there is no direct ferry from Sliema to Comino.

How do I get to the Blue Lagoon from Valletta?

You can get from Valletta to the Blue Lagoon via bus routes 41 or 42 from the main bus terminus to the Comino ferry pick-up points in Ċirkewwa or Marfa. You can also get there by taxi. If you’d rather book a day tour, you can also consider using the Valletta ferry services to cross over to Sliema Ferries.

Can you take a car to Comino or the Blue Lagoon?

No, you cannot take a car to Comino or the Blue Lagoon. Both are car free zones, only accessible by boat.

What is the best Blue Lagoon tour in Malta depends on your specific needs. These are the tried-and-tested operators we usually recommend:

Most boat tours to the Blue Lagoon take between 2 and 8 hours. Most people find that a half-day tour is enough, especially at the height of summer.

Although more expensive, they are the best tours to book if comfort and flexibility are your priorities, especially if you’re travelling as part of a small group. What is the Blue Lagoon Access Management System (AMS)?

The Blue Lagoon Access Management System (AMS) is an online platform where you can pre-book a timed QR entry ticket (free) to Comino’s Blue Lagoon if you intend to set foot on land.

Do I need to book a specific time slot?

Yes, you have to book either of the following time slots:

  • 08:00 AM – 1:30 PM
  • 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM
  • 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM.

Should you wish to stay longer than 4 hours, you can book more than one time slot.

Is it free to visit the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, it’s free to visit the Blue Lagoon. However, you need to pay for ferry services from the main island or a boat tour to get to Comino.

What are the available time slots?

You can choose from one of these three slots – Morning (08:00–13:00h), Afternoon (13:30–17:30h), Sunset (18:00–22:00h).

How do I book a slot?

On the access booking system, select your desired slot, enter details and email address, and then you will receive your access QR code.

Is the QR code available on my phone?

Yes, the QR code is available on your phone. You can also print it.

Can I modify my booking?

No, bookings cannot be modified.

Can I book a slot at the Blue Lagoon for my friends and family?

Yes, you can book for up to 4 people on one reservation.
