Blue Lagoon (Malta) Tickets: How to get Access

Comino’s Blue Lagoon attracts thousands of visitors every summer, and tourism takes its toll on the local environment.

To restrict and control visitor numbers, the Government of Malta introduced measures that require visitors to pre-book access tickets if they intend to set foot on shore (free of charge). This is to protect and preserve ecosystems on Comino Island — a Natura 2000 site.

This guide explains how the booking system works, when you need to book a ticket, and how.

When do you need an access ticket to visit the Blue Lagoon?

You only need an access ticket to visit the Blue Lagoon in a few situations. These are the common ways of getting there, and when you need one, or you don’t:

  1. Taking the Comino/Blue Lagoon ferry: Your access ticket is normally provided with your ferry ticket by the ferry operators. Comino Co-Op ferries clearly state this on their website, but check other operators before buying your ticket. You can also book access tickets yourself online, ahead of time. Check out this detailed guide for more info: Comino and Blue Lagoon Ferry
  2. Taking a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon: Unless you’d like to set foot on shore, you don’t need a government-issued ticket. Most people actually prefer staying on the boat during their visit because there’s very little space on the shore anyway during peak season. Anything you need for the day is usually provided on the boat as well. In some cases, boat operators anchor in the bay and don’t offer the option to step off the boat anyway. Check with your operator of choice.
  3. Getting there on a private boat: If you want to set foot on shore (to explore and discover Comino itself, for example – recommended outside of the summer season), you will need a ticket.

How to book your Blue Lagoon Ticket

Visitors can get their government-issued ticket to visit the Blue Lagoon via the online booking system. It’s completely free of charge, allowing access for four hours at a designated time slot (if you want to set foot on shore). If you want to extend your stay beyond four hours, you can reserve multiple time slots.

The process is quite easy:

  1. Go to www.blcomino.com
  2. Select a booking date
  3. Select a time slot: 08:00–13:00, 13:30–17:30, 18:00–22:00
  4. Enter your personal details & an email address to generate a unique QR code. Present this to a member of staff upon arrival.
  5. Wristbands are issued at ferry departure points, allowing access for the duration of the chosen time slot.

Alternative: Recommended Boat Tours

Interested in a more hassle-free experience at the Blue Lagoon? This is why an organised boat trip is usually the better choice:

  1. You don’t need to get an access ticket unless you want to set foot on shore. You can keep your belongings on board, enjoy swimming in the azure waters, and get some shade on the boat when you need it
  2. You won’t need to take a long bus journey or a taxi to Ċirkewwa to use the Comino ferries. Most boat trips depart from a prime tourist area, such as Sliema Ferries.
  3. You get straight to the Blue Lagoon
  4. Most operators also offer food and drinks, rent snorkelling equipment, and some offer sun loungers on board as well.
