Blue Lagoon Ferry (Comino): How to Catch it

Hopping onto the Blue Lagoon ferry from Malta (and even Gozo) is a popular and easy-to-use transportation option. Overall, the service is reliable and affordable, making it convenient to get to the Blue Lagoon (or to discover Comino Island at your own pace).

Alternatively, you can also consider booking an organised boat trip that departs from popular tourist destinations such as Sliema and Buġibba (and nearby villages).

This guide will give you all you need to know to catch the ferry, with local advice, and everything in between, of course.

Malta to Blue Lagoon Comino Ferry Services

The ferry service to visit the Blue Lagoon is available from Malta and Gozo, and is also referred to as the Comino ferry (since the most common drop-off spot on the island is at Blue Lagoon Bay). The ferry operates daily from Ċirkewwa (northernmost point of Malta), and during peak season, pick-up times are roughly every 30 minutes.

  • Ebsons €13 (return, adults), €5 (return, children)
  • Bella Comino Ferries (€9 return for both adults and children).

Good to know

  • Access tickets to the Blue Lagoon (required if you want to set foot on shore at Comino) are usually included with your ferry ticket.
  • Tickets can be purchased before you board the boat or online.
  • Some operators include a short boat ride past Comino’s caves, along the island’s shoreline, and the Crystal Lagoon
  • The journey from Malta takes around 25 – 35 minutes. From Gozo, it’ll be a little shorter than that.

Alternative: Boat Trips to the Blue Lagoon

Don’t feel like a long bus commute and want to avoid crowds? Want to go there with family or a group of friends? Consider booking an organised boat trip to the Blue Lagoon instead.

Although the cost of a day trip by boat is a little higher compared to ferry services (starting at €30 p.p.), you save lots of time, and you can ultimately enjoy a more comfortable trip. It also offers you the option to combine a morning or afternoon at the Blue Lagoon with a combo trip to Gozo (which is a popular choice).

Depending on the tour you choose, these are some of the popular perks offered:

  • No need for an access ticket to Comino, since you can stay on the boat
  • Avoid the queue at the ferry port
  • Shade when you need to escape the sun and heat
  • Visits to secluded areas only accessible by private boat
  • Lunch and open bar (sometimes offered at an additional fee, although you can usually bring your own food and drinks as well)
  • Water slides
  • Snorkelling equipment
  • Customised itinerary (with private trips).

FAQs

Is visiting the Blue Lagoon worth it?

Visiting the Blue Lagoon is worth the trip to enjoy this stunning bay. However, it does get crowded in summer with loads of tourists and many boats heading there daily. Consider a combo trip with Gozo to get enough time at the Blue Lagoon, but not to spend the full day there.

How often does the Blue Lagoon ferry run?

The Blue Lagoon ferry runs every 30 minutes during peak season. The service offered by Ebsons runs between 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM, while Comino Co-Op Ferries operate between 8:30 AM and 7:00 PM.

Can you go to the Blue Lagoon (Malta) without booking?

Yes, you can go to the Blue Lagoon without a booking, but ONLY if you’re getting there on a boat trip and not planning to set foot on shore at Comino Island. Otherwise, you need to pre-book your slot in advance via the access system, and upon arrival, you must present the QR code to a member of staff.
