Option 2: Take the Comino Ferry from Malta or Gozo

The cheapest way to travel to Comino (and the Crystal Lagoon) is by using the local ferry services from Ċirkewwa or Marfa in Malta or Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. While the ferry journey is around 20-30 minutes, bear in mind that if you include the bus trip/taxi to the terminal, the entire journey to Comino Island takes approximately one hour.

More details can be found in this dedicated guide: Blue Lagoon Ferry – How to Catch It.

Now, here’s the catch. The ferry drops you off at the Blue Lagoon ferry terminal. From this point, the coastal track to the Crystal Lagoon is around 10 to 15 minutes. For the most part, it’s a moderate walk, but you need to take extra caution when you’re heading further down towards the lagoon. The rocks are sharper, and some parts are quite steep, so make sure you’ve got a good pair of walking shoes.

Activities / Things to Do at the Crystal Lagoon

Swimming & Snorkelling

Starting with the obvious, the Crystal Lagoon is a wonderful place to enjoy a swim. This area is also characterised by dazzling azure waters that shine brightly under the sun’s rays. Meanwhile, snorkellers can get a glimpse of the underwater landscape characterised by large boulders, tunnels and a sandy seabed.

Diving & Cave Exploring

With so many caverns, reefs, and wreck dives waiting to be explored, the Lagoon is truly a diver’s playground.

  • P31 Dive Wreck: Located a little further away from the lagoon, this is one of the most incredible dives, where you can get some really cool underwater photos.
  • Popeye’s Cave: Known as L-Għar ta’ Bla Saqaf in Maltese (the cave with the collapsed ceiling), this incredible cave allows natural light to illuminate the interiors through a large skylight.
  • Crystal Lagoon Tunnel Cave: An unforgettable experience awaits snorkellers and divers who can swim inside the natural 30-metre-long tunnel cave. As you swim through this main cave, you’ll find other smaller caves located nearby.
  • Small Sea Cave: One of these small sea caves is quite impressive, located near the rocky beach on the eastern side of the lagoon. As you swim through, it opens up to a shallow water grotto with white sand inside.

Hiking

Comino Island isn’t a destination you can only visit during the summer months; it’s actually quite beautiful and more peaceful during the winter months. You can enjoy a hike along the cliffs and get to places such as Santa Marija Bay and San Niklaw Bay, which are within walking distance on the small island.

N.B. The ferries still run (on a more limited schedule) if weather conditions are great and the seas aren’t rough.

Tips from a Local 📝

  • If you plan to book boat trips to visit the Crystal Lagoon, choose accommodation options close to the departure point to avoid long bus rides/taxi fares, e.g. Sliema, St. Paul’s Bay, and Mellieħa.
  • I recommend bringing your own food and drinks, especially if you plan to spend the entire day at the Crystal Lagoon. Although there are a couple of food trucks at the Blue Lagoon, the items can be quite pricey.
  • Along with your flip-flops, pack a good pair of walking shoes if you plan on walking to the Crystal Lagoon.
  • Reputable operators like Yippee Tours, Sea Adventure & iMalta Boat Trips offer sunset tours, if you prefer to enjoy a late afternoon to evening tour rather than an early morning one.
  • Plan an off-season trip before/after the high season (mid-June – early September) to avoid crowds.
  • Take a camera or a good mobile phone to take some amazing photographs.
  • Use tools like Google Maps to follow the trails to all the beaches and points of interest on Comino Island.
