While the Blue Lagoon‘s crystal blue waters are the main reason why lots of tourists flock to Comino Island, you can actually discover hidden treasures scattered all over the island, including a variety of caves. Formed many years ago by distinct soft limestone and wave action, the natural beauty of the Comino sea caves needs to be seen up close to be believed.
Keep reading this guide for more details on how you can visit the Comino caves with boat trip operators and the local ferry service.
Comino is a stunning and unique destination surrounded by caves with fascinating rock formations. Stretching over 40 metres, they offer an unforgettable experience and plenty of photo opportunities to all visitors. What’s more, some of these caves have secret lagoons, small beaches, and other treasures hidden inside their walls.
Just opposite the Blue Lagoon and its little sandy beach is Cominotto. Besides being one of the smallest uninhabited Maltese Islands, Cominotto is home to a stunning sea cave. It’s sometimes referred to as Blue Lagoon Cave, even though that’s not its official name.
You can get there by booking a tour, or you can also swim across. Just be mindful of the undercurrents.
Here’s a fun fact: Cominotto Island was featured in the blockbuster film Troy (2004), starring Brad Pitt.
With an abundance of marine life, crystal-clear waters, and striking rock formations, the Crystal Lagoon tunnel cave (known as Il-Bejta tal-Fenek in Maltese and located – your guessed it – at the Crystal Lagoon) is truly a diver’s paradise.
What’s quite remarkable about this lagoon is that it has a 30-metre natural tunnel cave that snorkellers and divers can explore. As you swim through, this can lead you to other smaller sea caves and an overhang located nearby.
Locally known as L-Għar ta’ Bla Saqaf (the cave with the collapsed ceiling), this incredible cave lies hidden just east of the Crystal Lagoon. What’s so distinctive about it is that it allows natural light to illuminate the interiors through a large skylight.
The association with Popeye the Sailor is from the 1980s film Popeye, starring Robin Williams. One of the natural backdrops used in the film was this very spot when Popeye battles a giant octopus!
A secret paradise awaits; tucked away from the open sea, you’ll find the spectacular Lovers Cave. Featuring a depth of around 40m and a small sandy beach at the end, it’s a great spot for swimmers, snorkellers, and adventure seekers.
TIP: For safety reasons, it’s recommended that you have a life ring or a visible floatable device, so that other boats can see you.
Located on Comino’s north coast are the Santa Marija Caves. Featuring a series of at least 10, each has unique rock formations, multiple air pockets, and hidden treasures waiting to be explored. Some offer swim-throughs, while others have underwater tunnels and bright blue waters.
These caves aren’t just ideal for scuba diving enthusiasts or advanced divers; in fact, their shallow depth makes them ideal for snorkellers since they are not deeper than 8 metres.
The Monte Cristo Cave is a stunning sea cave located close to Santa Marija watchtower, South of the Crystal Lagoon. What’s so special about this spot is that you’ll find a hidden lagoon inside.
According to legend, smugglers, pirates, and sailors are said to have used this cave. In fact, another blockbuster that was filmed on Comino Island, The Count of Monte Cristo, draws inspiration from this since the treasure of Spada was hidden nearby.
To get to Comino Island and be able to visit the caves, you can either travel from Malta or Gozo by:
Since most of the main caves worth seeing are not reachable on foot, I recommend taking a boat trip if you’d like to spend more time at secluded spots. This is the more expensive option between the two, with prices ranging between €30 and over €100; however, it’s worth every penny when booking with the right operators.

One of the best things about this half-day private boat tour is that the itinerary is fully customisable to your liking. Throughout the day, you’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable skipper who’ll be happy to share fun facts as well as take you to several sites around Comino, including stops at stunning caves such as the Lovers Cave, the Monte Cristo Cave, and Popeye’s Cave, which is only accessible by private boats.

Comino Ferry Services are available from Malta and Gozo. The service operates daily, and during peak season, pick-up times are roughly every 30 minutes. The ferry still operates during the winter months; however, the schedule is less frequent due to bad weather and rough seas.
As for prices, expect to pay between €10 and €15 for a round-trip ticket, which includes a short tour of the nearby caves on the island.

You can find more information about the Comino Ferry here: Blue Lagoon Ferry – How to Catch It.
You can get to the Comino caves via the local ferry service or by booking an organised day trip. The latter is the recommended option since most tour operators include stops at other Comino sea caves that are harder to reach (alongside the main ones), and you’ll also have more time allocated at each location. Meanwhile, the Comino local ferry service gives you a quick tour of some of the main caves on your way to the Blue Lagoon.
