Sliema to Blue Lagoon Ferry: All Options Explained

Looking to visit Comino and the famous Blue Lagoon from Sliema using the ferry (also referred to as the Comino ferry)?

You’ve come to the right place.

There’s no direct Sliema to Blue Lagoon ferry, but I will help you get to the right ferry location at Ċirkewwa/Marfa. I’ll also show you the more convenient alternative by taking a boat tour from Sliema (that doesn’t necessarily need to be expensive).

Summary of what you need to know

Option 1: Taking a ferry from Ċirkewwa

  • Approximate Total cost for the day (DIY – bus + ferry): €20-€25 p.p.
  • Approximate total travel time: 2 hours (bus + Comino ferry)
  • Bus/Taxi Times from Sliema: Approx. 1 hour to 1 hour 30 mins. (bus) / 30 minutes (taxi)
  • Ferry Journey: From Ċirkewwa or Marfa, the ferry journey to Comino is 25 – 35 mins.
  • Bus/Taxi Prices: A single bus ticket costs €2.50, valid for 2 hours. You can also opt for other bus passes if you’re here for a longer stay. Depending on where you’re staying, taxi prices can vary from at least €10 or more.
  • Comino ferry prices: €13 – €15 (adults) / €5 – €7 (children)

Option 2: Taking a boat trip from Sliema to the Blue Lagoon

  • Prices starting from: €30 for a day trip (7 hours)
  • Approximate travel time: 45 mins.

📝 Important: Getting access tickets

If you want to set foot on land, you need to book access tickets in advance; if you want to go on a boat tour and stay on board, there’s no need.

Option 1: Getting there by yourself

On a budget? No problem! You can still plan a day at the Blue Lagoon by opting for public transport and the Comino ferry services in Ċirkewwa or Marfa.

From Sliema, you first need to use public transport – buses, taxis, or, if you’ve decided to drive, rental cars are available.

Although the journey is doable and is the cheaper way to travel compared to boat tours, you need to bear in mind a couple of things. In short, you do save a little money when opting for ferry services; however, you end up wasting a lot of time. Alternatively, you can opt for a boat tour (more info below!)

Pros & Cons of the DIY option

Pros

  • Cheaper journey to the ferry terminal in Ċirkewwa than a boat trip
  • Ferries operate every 30 minutes from 8:30 AM to 19:00 PM (Comino Co-op Ferries) and 9.15 AM to 18:00 PM (Ebsons).
  • It’s easy to book a taxi via your smartphone by downloading the respective apps.

Cons

  • The journey via public transport is longer, at least 1 hour by bus and 30 minutes by taxi. Buses can also get a little crowded, particularly during the peak season.
  • You need to book a spot with the access system, since you’re setting foot on land.
  • If you’d like to find a spot on the shore, it’s best to take an early ferry, so that means you also need to take an early bus. Also, keep in mind that there’s no place on shore to get shade unless you manage to rent one of the few deckchairs with an umbrella available.

By Bus

From Sliema, only Route 222 can take you to Ċirkewwa. This bus passes by several bus stops within the town, including Ferries 5, Chalet, and Exiles. If you’re staying in St. Julian’s, you can also take this bus.

A quick browse on the Malta Public Transport website or the Tallinja App shows you all the stops and their schedules.

By Taxi

I recommend taking a taxi if you don’t want to wait around for the bus to the Comino ferry terminal in Ċirkewwa. As for operators, download the respective apps, all of which are available on the App Store and Google Play Store:

  • Bolt
  • Uber
  • eCabs

Comino Ferry Services

Upon arrival at the terminal in Ċirkewwa or Marfa, there are two Comino ferry operators you can use to get to the Blue Lagoon:

  • Comino Co-Op Ferries
  • Ebsons

Tickets can be purchased before you board the boat or online. You can expect to pay anything between €13 and €15 for a round-trip ticket, which includes a little tour of the famous Comino caves. Meanwhile, the ferry journey to Comino is around 25 – 35 minutes.

Generally, Comino Co-Op Ferries’ vessels operate from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, while Ebsons operate from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. I recommend checking the full ferry schedules on the respective websites.
