Mellieħa to the Blue Lagoon: How to get there

Trying to figure out how to get from Mellieħa to the Blue Lagoon in Malta?

I’m a local, and in this guide, I show you exactly how to get there.

Long story short – There are two options:

  1. Organised Boat Tours
  2. Mellieħa to Blue Lagoon Ferry Services

Keep reading this post to help you decide which of the two options is suited for your preferences and travel group.

Accessing the Blue Lagoon

If you intend to sunbathe, relax, and walk around Comino, you now need an access pass (free). You can either pre-book it via the online booking system, or if you’re using ferry services, some operators include it with their own tickets.

More details here: Blue Lagoon Access Tickets Guide.

Ferry Services vs Organised Boat Tour from Mellieħa Bay

Let’s compare the two most popular ways of getting to the Blue Lagoon from Mellieħa.

Comparison FERRY SERVICES FROM MELLIEĦA  BOAT TRIPS FROM MELLIEĦA
Price If you’re on a budget, this is the ideal way to get to the Blue Lagoon (Prices vary between €13 – €15 per person for a round-trip) Although they are more expensive than ferry services (approx. €30 or more), the overall experience is better, especially if you book a private tour.
Flexibility The last trip from Comino Island back to Gozo is usually at around 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM (depending on the company and how many people are still on the island). A variety of Blue Lagoon boat trips to choose from for different travel groups: families, couples, friends, solo travellers, etc.
Access ticket You need to pre-book your free ticket to the Blue Lagoon to set foot on shore. You don’t need to book your free ticket to the Blue Lagoon if you’re staying on board or just swimming.
Sightseeing The skipper includes a visit to the caves on your way there or on your way back. The skipper takes you to secret spots, caves, and other secluded bays you may not be able to reach on foot / swim to.
Experience If you’d like to visit secluded spots and hidden caves, this is not the ideal option since these are generally only accessible by smaller boats. Some boat operators offer snorkelling equipment and have facilities you can use, such as water slides, ice coolers to put your food and drinks in.

Tips from a Local 📝

  • If you’re booking a boat tour, ensure that you choose one that is suitable for you and your travel group.
  • I advise you to arrive at the ferry terminal in Ċirkewwa or Marfa as early as possible if you’re using the local ferry services. Particularly during peak summer months, many tourists visit the Blue Lagoon and Comino, so avoid leaving it till late if you want to make the most of your day.
  • Pack sun essentials: Sunblock with SPF 50, a hat and sunglasses.
  • I recommend taking your own food and drinks from the main island. Although kiosks are available in Comino, some of the items are quite overpriced.
  • Ideally, plan your visit during late May and early June or late September and October. There are usually fewer crowds at this time of year.
